UGalilee Courses for 2010

The following courses will be taught in UGalilee 2010. These will be supplemented by more than 10 faculty-led study trips throughout Israel to sites in Nazareth, the Sea of Galilee, the Golan Heights, Tel Aviv, Jaffa, Jerusalem, Masada, the Dead Sea and others. SAP301: Human and Material Culture in Ancient Galilee

This course, taught by an archaeologist, will move between different historical and archaeological periods and investigate themes relating to material culture such as: houses and housing; cult and beliefs; temples, synagogues and churches; fortifications and fortresses; agricultural industry; vessels, tools and more.

SAP302: Archaeological Survey

The archaeological survey will be held in the vicinity of Karmiel. Beginning in the classroom with the principles of an archaeological survey, a 4x4 vehicle will then take the student surveyors to the field for 6-7 hour foot surveys to look for archaeological remains, followed on campus by the sorting of pottery, analyzing finds and discussing results. SAP303: The Rise of Christianity and Rabbinic Judaism in their Galilee Homeland

This two-part course will survey the history of the emergence of Rabbinic Judaism and early Christianity that were born in the mountains and valleys of the Galilee. It will focus on the time of Jesus and his first disciples (the 1st and 2nd centuries CE) and the changes in Judaism, including the codification of the Mishna, after the loss of the 2nd Temple and the 2nd Jewish revolt against the Romans.

SAP304: Aspects of the Galilee Region (Galilee Mosaic)

This course is an examination of different aspects of the Galilee and will be taught by professors from UM. It will consist of a series of brief mini-courses, such as: history; geography; art; literature; minorities; and religions.

SAP305: Jewish Thought over the Ages

The major philosophers and ideas of Judaism will be traced in this survey course. It will be largely based on readings from primary texts (in English translation), with the texts chosen both for their intrinsic interest as well as for being representative of major trends in Jewish thought and illustrative of classic works.

Seminars

There will be brief seminars at other locations during the course of the semester.
These include:

  • Alexander Muss Institute for Israel Studies – Seminars will deal with the history of the Jews and the history of Israel.
  • Yad Vashem – Students will be introduced to the main elements of the Holocaust at this center for Holocaust education and studies.
